WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: West coast ska band releases a debut album and gathers a rabid fan base but collapses as the record is released.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Ska, for me, can be problematic if there’s no variety in tempo, pace or sound. That’s the main problem I have with this record. It’s well-played, and the duo of female voices is quite unique in the ska-verse, but over the course of 12 tracks (plus the bonus tracks) it got a little bit old. That’s just my personal thing – I have a ska limit I guess.

The thing is, I can’t pick out a bad cut – they all were good, just same-y until the bonus tracks from 1992 that were released when the band got back together after they splintered in 1990.

All in all, I like DHC; I did when I saw them on 120 Minutes. I think this is one that would be good as part of a ska playlist on random where it’s not cut after cut after cut.

BTW – One cut didn’t make the transition between the first reissue and the second, for some reason.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: The early history of DHC is tangled. In fact, it was really an offshoot of Operation Ivy, but Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong left early on. Wing and Larsen were the only two left from the original band when they recorded this.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yep. Moon Records added on singles and compilations cuts calling it 1989-1992 and then later The Old Record.

GRADE: B-: Basically, for the repetitive sound of the actual album, the later bonus cuts add a little variety.
