WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Take two Vanilla Fudge, an Amboy Duke and a Detroit Wheel, shake well, and you get – sludge.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Supergroups became a thing in the late 60’s, early 70’s. This one was formed as a result of another super group going by the wayside. Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice were all set to join Jeff Beck until the latter was injured in a wreck. Since they already broke off from Vanilla Fudge, they found a couple of other wayward souls with credibility and chops, and, ta-da, Cactus!

It’s heavy and sludgy for the most part. McCarty is a pretty good heavy blues guitarist. But Bogert and Appice still have a lot of the turgid Fudge in them, and there’s a freakin’ drum solo during “Feels So Good” that makes you start to look at your watch. The sad thing is that’s a decent track except for that timewaster.

About half of this is OK for what it is. The rest can be cast into the pit of excess. Also, ballads aren’t their thing at all.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: McCarty was the inspiration for Ted Nugent to pick up the guitar. So you can blame him.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Oh, no. If there was, it’d be just another drum solo probably.

GRADE: C: They zoom on “Parchman Farm” and never hit those heights again. Tread carefully though the heavy, turgid sludge.
