Dance Hall Crashers – Lockjaw

ARTIST: Dance Hall Crashers DHC_Lockjaw
TITLE: Lockjaw
YEAR RELEASED: 1995
CHART ACTION: #8 Heatseekers
SINGLES: Enough
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Go was on a movie soundtrack
LINEUP: Elyse Rogers, Karine Denike, Jason Hammon, Scott Goodell, Mikey Weiss, Gavin Hammon
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: DHC jettisons the horn section, and makes a more punkish ska album. Same problem, though, the songs are too similar to each other.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: 14 songs in 40 minutes, and I can tell you it was somewhat entertaining and I did enjoy the first few songs. The punky ska with female voices and a more mature outlook is a pretty decent twist and a good listen. The lack of a horn section I think helps more than hurts – it makes them stand out from the rest of the third-wave (or is it fourth? I can’t keep track.,,) ska bands.

Yet, the same issues for Dance Hall Crashers pop up even without the horns. The songs all blur together. When shuffling an entire library, this is fine – but listening to a whole album is problematic. I couldn’t pick out a stand out cut or identify the singles.

Still, if you like your ska on the punkier side, this is a decent record to grab.

NOTES & MINUTAIE: Tim Armstrong from Rancid wrote one of the songs. I couldn’t tell what one it was unless I looked at the track list.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No

GRADE: B-: Good songs, no variety.
