TITLE: I Should Coco
YEAR RELEASED: 1995
CHART ACTION: #1 UK

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Really, only in the UK you did.
LINEUP: Gaz Coombes, Danny Goffey, Mick Quinn, Rob Coombes
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: A UK sensation in the mid-90’s, combining punk energy and pop hooks. This album is all about being young, since Gaz was still a teenager when he wrote the lyrics.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Youth is served here. The frenetic energy of this album could really only be accomplished by teenagers wanting to get where they’re going, and in a hurry. This paid off with the singles above, especially “Caught by the Fuzz”, “Lenny” and “Alright”.

There is some subtlety here, as Rob Coombes (then an unofficial member) added keyboard and piano flourishes which helped break down and accent the cacophony. They’re definitely wearing their Buzzcocks influences on their sleeves here.

The album in a whole is pretty good, but the hits definitely outshine most of the deep track. It’s still a great pickup for you who remember 1995 fondly (well, you Brits at least).

NOTES & MINUTIAE: For the last several years of their existence, they no longer played “Alright” since they ‘outgrew’ it.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Some copies had a bonus single along with the album.

GRADE: B+: Pretty good – not as top-tier as the phenomenon had you believe (being a #1 in the UK and all), but it’s a good, yet frenetic, post-punk record.
