ARTIST: Comets on Fire
TITLE: Comets on Fire
YEAR RELEASED: 2001
CHART ACTION: None
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: No sir, none of these
LINEUP: Ethan Miller, Noel von Harmonson, Ben Flashman, Utrillo Kushner.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: LOUD NOISES! Yet intriguing due to von Harmonson’s Echoplex. STILL IT’S LOUD!
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Man, this is one loud racket! Comets on Fire ain’t for the dainty. Their debut is about as loud and raucous as any, but it’s all seemingly in control even if it sounds out of control.
The secret weapon is von Harmonson’s Echoplex, which thanks to its delay, echo and other properties sounds like a deranged space alien playing with a wah-wah pedal and a talkbox. That adds a lot of color to the proceedings, whereas Comets on Fire would just be your typical noisy-garage band without it.
The songs all kind of run together. Miller shouts and screams vocals and plays his guitar like crazy. The drummer is trying to keep it all together, yet all that’s really holding it together is the weird sounds from the Echoplex.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: This was released on Jello Biafra’s label, Alternative Tentacles. Also, the last track has a hidden track attached to it. I exiled it because it’s 20 minutes of wanky noise.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No
GRADE: B-: There’s something compelling about these LOUD NOISES!
