Band of Susans – Hope Against Hope

ARTIST: Band of Susans 220px-BandofSusans_Hope

TITLE:  Hope Against Hope

SINGLES: None, but their debut single is appended to this.

LINEUP: Robert Poss, Susan Stenger, Susan Lyall, Susan Tallman, Ron Spitzer, Alva Rogers

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Atmospheric, guitar-oriented band creates and sculpts sounds using three guitars playing non-traditional parts.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Instead of traditional rock structures, Band of Susans created compositions instead. By this, each instrument had its own distinct part that were puzzled together. There wasn’t a riff or a structure; the three guitars layered sound upon sound.

Surprisingly, it’s very listenable. Yeah, it’s not pop-oriented at all, and Poss as a vocalist is more of a barker than a crooner. Yet it’s fascinating to hear all of the guitars meld together.

There’s also some volume here. With so many guitars roaring at once, and not all being just chords and solos, that’s explainable. Band of Susans loved their feedback and drone. If you’re not afraid of noisy layerd sound, try it.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: They did influence, and had some symbiosis, with the Shoegaze trend in the UK.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Their debut EP was appended to the CD version and is now part of the streaming.

GRADE: B+:  Only a couple of cuts are too outre for me, but there’s rewards here in the drone.
