Bill Fay – Time of the Last Persecution

ARTIST: Bill Fay Persecution

TITLE:  Time of the Last Persecution

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW:  This is as obscure as it gets for something on a UK major label

LINEUP: Bill Fay, Ray Russell, Alan Rushton, Darryl Runswick, Nick Evans

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Second album for pianist and songwriter Fay is full of vivid imagery from Daniel and Revelation.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Bill Fay’s first album (which has disappeared from streaming even though it was re-released about 20 years ago) contained some very poignant songs on the environment and society. On that record, I heard “Methane River” thanks to someone who mixed it for me.

This was released the year after, and Fay turned his sights toward the spiritual, with 14 cuts about religion, faith, spirituality and the apocalypse. The band he was working with is definitely in sync with his songs, as they play tightly and even contribute to the sound of the more apocalyptic numbers.

It’s obscure, but don’t let that stop you. It’s religious in nature, but don’t let that stop you. This is pretty decent stuff and worth a listen.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Fay basically disappeared from the industry after this album stiffed and he was dropped. He did some recording in the late 70’s, and never stopped writing, but didn’t get back into the studio until 2010.

GRADE: B+: Fay’s piano and the band work well together. It’s a hidden gem.
