YEAR RELEASED: 1958

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: If you have a background in old time folk and country, then you’d know a lot of these songs..

LINEUP: Don Everly, Phil Everly, Floyd Chance.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: A full album of country and folk songs that definitely lived up to the title of the record.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Either it was courageous, fearless, or a miscalculation. The Everly Brothers second album was a throwback to a simpler time, full of songs that were old-timey even in 1958.

The rock-and-roll kids who loved the Everly Brothers didn’t flock to this. There were no singles released and it didn’t chart. This may have been calculated to help the Everly Brothers with the parents of the teenagers that bought their records. Or, most likely, they loved these songs and wanted to do them and had leverage with Cadence thanks to their hits.

The brothers sing heavenly. The accompaniment is sparse, but exactly what was needed (two acoustic guitars and a stand up bass). The issue is that over an album, it gets a bit long and kind of repetitive.  It’s a decent tribute to the old songs, though, and if you like close harmony singing on good ol’ time songs, this is one for you.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: “Kentucky” is a song they kept in their repertoire for years.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.

GRADE: B: Good singing and fine renditions of these old songs.
