The Posies – Failure

TITLE:  Failure

YEAR RELEASED: 1988

CHART ACTION: None

SINGLES: None

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: I May Hate You Sometimes, Believe in Something Other (Than Yourself)

LINEUP: Jon Auer, Ken Stringfellow, Rick Roberts, Mike Musberger

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Debut album for the Auer / Stringfellow songwriting and harmonizing team finds them in a more acoustic vein than their later material but do show some of the power pop goodness they would specialize in.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: If you dove into the Posies’ first album after listening to their later ones, you may be surprised that the majority of the songs are more acoustic than electric. Even the more electric songs have a big acoustic guitar component. The harmonies are there, and a few of the songs are stellar.

I’m not surprised since Auer and Stringfellow cut their teeth as an acoustic duo and these early songs feature those that were in their early repertoire.

They’d evolve, and really get electrified, ornate but still keep the pop spirit in their works. While it’s not the first record I’d get for the Posies, it’s not bad – just different.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Auer and Stringfellow met at a Dan Reed Network show.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Demos that they put out to get shows and bandmates.

GRADE: B: Good songs, great harmonies.
