YEAR RELEASED: 1991

LINEUP: Rachel Goswell, Neil Halstead, Christian Savill, Nick Chaplin, Simon Scott

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: After a set of EPs, shoe gaze band releases chill LP. Very chill. Too chill.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Slowdive’s sound is almost onomatopoeic in nature. They play slow and sometimes they sound like one was diving in cough syrup.

Atmospheric, moody, torpid. Something like that. There’s nothing wrong with being slow and chill, for sure, but the combination of the hushed distortion and fuzzy sounds make one…sleepy.

I like it, in small doses. Listening to the whole thing would be good for a night cap with some Sleepy Time tea.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: There was a sticker on the record that said “Like a mind altering substance, without the risk…”

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: They released a version with three EPs appended. That’s not streaming, though.

GRADE: C+: Someone wake up the band and tell them they left their distortion pedal on.
