WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Tex-Mex bar band is all about fun and simple, silly rock-and-roll songs. It gave them a lot more hits that you’d have expected.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: This package has the A and B sides of every MGM single released by the group between 1965 and 1967 and two later singles by Samudio.

If you’ve heard “Wooly Bully” (and who hasn’t?) you know the drill. Organ riffs, simple lyrics and a sound that exudes fun. They do vary the formula a little from time to time (“Little Red Riding Hood”), but there were no slow spots in their singles at least. They knew they had to get it in and out and leave it memorable. The B-sides are just as energetic as the A-sides.

Sam and his group released six albums and 13 singles in those three years. This is a good representation of their work, and even if you know just “Wooly Bully” it’s a fun listen.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Sam released a solo album called Sam, Hard & Heavy in 1971 that had Duane Allman on a cut.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No

GRADE: B: Rock and roll ain’t rocket science, it’s supposed to be fun. This is.
