Scruffy the Cat – High Octane Revival

ARTIST: Scruffy the Cat       scruffy

TITLE:  High Octane Revival

YEAR RELEASED: 1986

CHART ACTION: None

SINGLES:  It was a six song EP

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: If you listened to my show on WNDY, you definitely heard 40 Days and 40 Nights

LINEUP: Charlie Chesterman, Stephen Fredette, Randall Lee Gibson IV, Mac Paul Stanfield, Stona Finch

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Rootsy band from Boston are just rock and roll fun.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: A little retro, a little smarty pants, and a lot of fun – Scruffy the Cat built up a base in the New England area before being signed to Relativity Records, and they slapped out this EP for the alternative and college ground to groove to.

Chesterman’s voice has a little bit of a rockabilly tenor in it. Fredette knows his way around the Chuck Berry lead guitar charts, and Finch adds an interesting mix with accordion and banjo.

At only six songs, it seems short, but not every song is a winner. There’s enough good stuff here to seek it out though!

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Chesterman and Stanfield moved from Iowa to Boston in 1983 in search of a better music scene.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No – but the only way to get it is with the Time Never Forgets anthology.

GRADE: B+: It’s fun and you’re not supposed to dwell on this too much.
