WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Unknown soul singer who was imitating James Brown in clubs finds his voice with the help of Daptone Records and the Menahan Street Band
SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: A reminder that talent isn’t just what you hear in the radio or on record, it lives everywhere and just needs to be found.
Charles Bradley was a journeyman signer making a living as a James Brown impersonator (well, kind of a living) when he was discovered by Daptone Records (Sharon Jones’ label) and paired up with the Menahan Street Band for some singles and then a full album in 2011.
The result is a good blast of neo-soul – a tribute back to the heydays of the genre in the 60’s and 70’s. The bands arrangements fits Bradley well, and give it his all in his growly, gruff voice.
He was adventurous in some covers, and his Nirvana cover works pretty well. The cover of Neil Young doesn’t quite match up. Still, a good debut from a voice that shouldn’t have taken so long to be found.
NOTES & MINUTIAE: He was a cook and performed odd jobs as well as performing on and off since 1967.
IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No.
GRADE: B+: His gruff voice works with the material.
