Joan Baez – Joan Baez in Concert

ARTIST: Joan Baez 220px-BaezinConcert1
TITLE: Joan Baez in Concert
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: A lot of these songs are traditional or well known.
LINEUP: Joan Baez
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Solo folk artist’s third album is a live affair, goes gold.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: I’ll have to admit, I’m not much of a pure folkie, and the first time I heard Baez’ voice, with that clear, unadorned vibrato, I didn’t like it.

I admire her work now, even though I’m still not a big fan, and I’m probably going to pick and choose the songs I keep – usually on compilations. Much like I picked to start with this album instead of her first two studio albums. That being said, I think everything she did early in her career on Vanguard is worth listening to.

This live album has well-chosen material, and Baez is an excellent performer who keeps the crowd rapt with attention – and since it’s a lot of material folk audiences would know, they sing along.

I’m probably not going to keep much of it, to be honest. But if you like some Baez or like solo folk artists – you’ll like this.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: The set opens with “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You”, which is where Jimmy Page and Robert Plant heard it and decided to put it in Led Zeppelin’s repertoire.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes with three bonus cuts.

GRADE: B: Solo guitar and voice with good material but I do think at least now, many years after the folk boom, acoustic solo folk is pretty much an acquired taste.
