Marshall Crenshaw – Marshall Crenshaw

ARTIST: Marshall Crenshaw

TITLE: Marshall Crenshawfirst_md

SINGLES: Someday, Someway (#36), There She Goes Again, Cynical Girl

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Unfortunately, no.

LINEUP: Marshall Crenshaw, Chris Denato, Robert Crenshaw and a couple of session guys doing odds and ends.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: A power-pop singer / songwriter, and Buddy Holly freak debuts his songs after touring in Beatlemania.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Marshall Crenshaw should have had a great career. He’s made a nice living as a cult artist, but this record should have made him more of a household name. It’s full of great power pop and rock with catchy choruses and intriguing arrangements that don’t sound like it’s just a trio.

The failure of the follow up singles past Someday, Someway to launch was telling. If Cynical Girl couldn’t hit, then the public wasn’t going to buy more than the first single. That’s the way it goes, I suppose. Power pop is a tough sell for whatever reason, especially the acts that are more pop than power. Songs like Cynical Girl and Mary Anne need to be heard, damnit!

Someday, Someway, though is a pure classic song. One of the best songs of my lifetime. I love searching out clips of him performing on television with his trio.

NOTES & MINUTAE: Crenshaw comes from a very musical family. That’s his brother drumming in his band. Also, Crenshaw, who was John Lennon in Beatlemania, portrayed Buddy Holly in La Bamba.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION:  Yes, with demos and live cuts. The streaming version is shorter than the one Rhino released.
GRADE: A- : The best songs really outweigh the rest, though it’s a very enjoyable record and it’s a great listen
