Doctor & The Medics – Laughing at the Pieces

ARTIST: Doctor & The Medics 220px-Doctor_and_the_medics_laughing
TITLE: Laughing at the Pieces
SINGLES: Spirit in the Sky (#69 US, #1 UK)
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Not here. The second single, Burn (#29 UK), was a bonus track and not streaming.
LINEUP: Clive Jackson (Doctor), Steve McGuire, Richard Searle, Steve Ritchie, Wendi West (Anadin), Colette Appleby (Anadin)
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Retro psychedelic band make an album containing a spot on cover of “Spirit in the Sky” and several other originals that are okay at best.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: You’re a band that’s visually interesting, you cover an old track almost note for note, and make an interesting video. That was a hit formula in 1986, but it doesn’t really lead to substance or anything else that you’d want to remember or play again. MTV played the heck out of the single, because, why not.

All I can say is go find the video on-line, and go find the Norman Greenbaum version of their hit. This isn’t horrible, but it does sound a watered down psychedelic tribute band with a cheap Elvis impersonator. Doctor has a weak voice and the drums sound like 80’s hell. I mean, the drums sound flat and empty. I’d have sued if I was the drummer because it made him sound like he hit with no power.

MTV Nostalgia giveth, and taketh away.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: There are different cuts on the US release than what wound up streaming, and really, the track differences are of no use especially since “Burn” is misssng. That may have made it worthwhile..

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, a couple of other worthless covers are attached.

GRADE: C-: McGuire can make his guitar sound like an honest-to-goodness 60’s guitar, and, um…yeah.
