Green on Red – Green on Red

ARTIST: Green on Red MI0001775905
TITLE: Green on Red
SINGLES: It was an EP
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: If you’re one of the lucky ones to get a mix from me over the years, Death and Angels was on it probably.
LINEUP: Dan Stuart, Chris Cacavas, Jack Waterson, Alex MacNicol
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Paisley Underground band releases an organ-heavy EP that takes you back to 1968.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Wearing their influence on their sleeve, Green on Red released this trippy sounding record full of insistent organ and metaphysical lyrics. Stuart’s vocals and guitar and Cacavas’ organ provide the trip to the 60’s.

After leaving Tuscon for LA and recording a red-vinyl independent EP (that seems to have vanished except for pawn shop copies) Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate (another Paisley Underground band), recorded and released this himself. Somehow, the tapes seem to have gotten a little damaged, so at times this sounds like a bootleg. But, the music is what matters here.

This is a band figuring out its direction. The best songs (“Death and Angels”, “Illustrated Crawling”) hit with their mix of psychedelia and hooks, while the others sound like workouts for trippy vocals and organs and are really lesser semi-copies of the good songs. They’d get better, and legendarily obscure.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Their original EP, called Two Bibles, can be found for $125 online. I’m not paying that – especially since I no longer have a turntable.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yeah…kinda. This is tacked on to their second album Gas, Food, Lodging – and not their first full length album. That’s all due to licensing.

GRADE: B: A little off for the production issues, and a little off for the lack of variety in sound for some of the songs. The good songs are really worth checking out!
