The Decemberists – Five Songs

ARTIST: The Decemberists  220px-Fivesongsep
TITLE: Five Songs
YEAR RELEASED: 2001
CHART ACTION: No
SINGLES: This was an EP
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Apology Song is the fan fave
LINEUP: Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query, Ezra Holbrook
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Six songs (originally five but they added one later) that kind of announce the Decemberists and their worldview to the public.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Unlike many Decemberists albums (or EPs even) there’s no underlying theme uniting the songs together. This is simply five, er, six songs that tell their own narrative within the constraints of the song.

The best known one to fans is “Apology Song”, a song about how Meloy was trying to apologize to his friend because the friend’s bike was stolen on Meloy’s watch.

Unlike many debuts, this is a good place to start for the Decemberists newbie. If you like this, you like them.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: “Apology Song” was actually a transcribed message Meloy left on an answering machine.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Well, it was five songs when it was self-released. Now it’s six.

GRADE: A-: A great use of the EP format.
