The Gits – Frenching the Bully

ARTIST: The Gits Frenching_The_Bully
TITLE: Frenching the Bully
SINGLES: Second Skin, Spear and Magic Helmet
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Well, in the Pacific NW, yeah, you might have.
LINEUP: Mia Zapata, Joe Spleen, Matt Dresdner, Steve Moriarty
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: First true full length for Seattle punk band that could have huge in the scene…but….

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Mia Zapata was a fire-breathing, flame-throwing, feminist singer and all around magnet. People couldn’t help to be drawn to her, and this record shows why. Miles ahead of the rudimentary Riot-Grrrl sounds emanating from Olympia, the Gits broadcast feminist fury with excellent punk rock chops. 220px-FrenchingTheBullyReissueFront

The songs on this record can’t be separated from the tragedy of Mia Zapata, who was brutally raped and strangled not many months after this release (and while the band was recording their second album). Hearing this now, knowing what happened to her, makes this an even more poignant album. It’s a firey testament to someone who had a lot to say, and couldn’t say it anymore.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: They originally met at Antioch College, and moved to Seattle in 1990.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, with live tracks and another single cut.

GRADE: A-: Feminist punk rock with only a few stumbles – most of this is furious, frantic and first rate.
