ARTIST: The Knack 220px-Get_The_Knack_album_cover
TITLE: Get the Knack
SINGLES: My Sharona (#1 US, #6 UK), Good Girls Don’t (#11 US, #66 UK)
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Others should have been on the radio, but weren’t
LINEUP: Doug Feiger, Bert Averre, Bruce Gary, Prescott Niles
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Teenage sex and love. But mostly teenage sex.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: First off, the 13 ½ year old in me loves, loves, loves this album. I played it constantly when I got it. I mean, it was my eighth grade jam.

Listening to it now, I still like it a lot. I kinda cringe at some of the sexist lyrics, where Feiger goes beyond the normal teenage boy stuff and basically expects the girl to put out or she’s the one in the wrong. The teen sex stuff has been a staple of music since music was invented, but the Knack push it a little further. Oh, and even more-so that I know Sharona was a 17-year old who dated Feiger at the time. (It would get much worse next record…)

However, the songs are infectious and at least nine of the 12 cuts are solid to spectacular and a couple more could have been big hit singles had they released them. I only wish that the production was a little different, with more emphasis on the guitar. The Posies weren’t invented yet, though.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: The producer was Mike Chapman, best known for his work with Sweet and other Brit glam-rock bands and Blondie.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, a few editions with an outtake, demos and rehearsals, not much.

GRADE: A-: I can’t help it – it’s really a fine record. Just a couple cuts on Side 2 (showing my age) drag it down a notch.
