Passion Pit – Manners

ARTIST: Passion Pit 220px-Mannersalbum
TITLE: Manners
SINGLES: Sleepyhead (#104 US), The Reeling (#34 US Alternative, #99 UK), To Kingdom Come, Little Secrets (#39 US Alternative)
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Don’t think so unless they snuck into a commercial.
LINEUP: Michael Angelakos, Nate Donmoyer, Ian Hultquist
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Shiny, happy electro-pop for now people.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Everything’s gonna be OK if you listen to Passion Pit. Well, at least that’s what it seems like. This is a happy record, full of happy electronica.

There are a lot of hooks floating about here as well. The songs tend to overlap into one another except for the hooks. That’s OK; it’s great atmospheric music. The songs do get lost at times because of the sound.

Still, Passion Pit’s debut long-player is good for a few spins. The hooks will keep you coming back.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: During this year, Passion Pit also remixed songs by Gotye: Phoenix: and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, a few bonus tracks released the next year.

GRADE: B: I wouldn’t call it disposable. The hooks are decent. Some of the songs do get lost, though.

Passion Pit – Chunk of Change

ARTIST: Passion Pit 220px-Chunkofchangecover
TITLE: Chunk of Change
SINGLES: Sleepyhead
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Probably not, unless you’re hip to this.
LINEUP: Michael Angelakos, Ian Hultquist
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Emerson College student records 4-track EP as an apology to his girlfriend, and then passes it out around campus. Everyone digs it, so he records two more tracks and a career is born.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Part of me likes this and part of me doesn’t, I get the sentiment and agree that it’s pretty well crafted, but some of the new electronica leaves me cold a bit. Also, the fact that it started out as a private mix tape, as it were, is kind of like spying perhaps?

However, the song Sleepyhead is excellent and should be on anyone’s playlist. It’s on their first proper album as well.

NOTES & MINUTAE: Angelekos was a one-man band for a few years, but now has a solid group including Hultquist.

GRADE: B- : It’s a decent start. Since the best song is on the first proper album I’m going to exile the rest for now.
