Residents – Meet the Residents

ARTIST: Residents                    220px-meettheresidents1

TITLE:  Meet the Residents

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: There has to be some Residents fans reading this, but to the average listener, no.

LINEUP: The Residents + Snakefinger

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: First album from the San Francisco based avant-garde media destruction company. It’s weird, but not unlistenable.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: If you have a tolerance for deconstructed songs, collages, and some avant-garde musique concrete (kind of like Zappa at his most out there times five) then you may be ready for the Residents.

The media troupe took a break from a film they were making to record this album, which was a pastiche of various sounds, narrations, melodies and other recordings and constructed them into song-like forms, which you can really follow in melodic terms. Structurally, it’s music, but music formed from many sources.220px-meettheresidents2

You can pick out some instruments, sure, and some things are fairly straight forward, but it’s all kind of blended together in a soup at times, and combining past recordings manipulated on tape with new recordings was innovative, considering they did this all manually and not using computerized whatzies. That alone is pretty remarkable.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: The legend is that the first year, this sold just 40 copies until a couple of DJs started to champion them – back when DJs could take a chance and not just play the hits..

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: One CD version had their four-part Santa Dog single released in 1972.

GRADE: B: I can say that you need to listen to it to decide for yourself. I can understand what they’re trying to do, and I didn’t run away in fear.
