WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Debut album from the alternative rap groups shows a penchant for wordplay and odd samples.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: The debut from A Tribe Called Quest shows that the group is right in there with De La Soul in their use of language and atypical samples and beats. By moving away from the battles, hard beats and overt political commentary, ATCQ blazed a trail in the alternative hip-hop scene.

The record has some great moments – they picked the singles. However, the rest of the album is just OK. It does show a lot of inventive work from DJ Ali and Q-Tip is a great rhymer – but it’s stretched too thin at over an hour. Some pruning would have helped – the dawning of the CD era meant that the edit button wasn’t used much.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Ali only joined when Jarobi came on board. Jarobi then left after this record, but Ali stayed.

GRADE: B: It should have been around 45 minutes. It’s got some classics so it’s a keeper.
