Soul Asylum – Say What You Will, Clarence…Karl Sold the Truck

ARTIST: Soul Asylum 220px-Say_what_you_will_clarence
TITLE: Say What You Will Clarence…Karl Sold the Truck (Originally Say What You Will…Everything Can Happen)
SINGLES: Walking, Happy, Religiavision
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Sick of That Song has been on some comps
LINEUP: Dave Pirner, Karl Mueller, Dan Murphy, Pat Morley
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Rough and ragged debut from Twin Cities combo is more of a punk record than anything else, but glimmers of Pirner’s pop rock sensibilities come to the surface on occasion.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: If you just know Soul Asylum from the radio, you won’t be ready for this. This is 14 gruff tunes from a young band that had more in common with the early Replacements than Pearl Jam or the Gin Blossoms. Bob Mould produced the album and he basically just made sure they plugged in and played the right chords, really.

There’s only one dog of a track and the rest have some redeeming qualities. It’s a long way from Runaway Train, but I think that was an anomaly of Soul Asylum if you heard all of their Twin Tone and A&M stuff.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: This was originally a nine-song EP or LP or whatever. In 1988, they added on five cuts from a cassette only release (which contains the one bad cut I mentioned) and renamed the album to what it is today.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No. But the original vinyl with the old name is pretty rare.

GRADE: C+ : Only one song is poor, and I’m not exiling it because it’s OK for the most part.
