Translator – Heartbeats & Triggers

ARTIST: Translator                          220px-Album_Heartbeats_And_Triggers

TITLE:  Heartbeats & Triggers

SINGLES:  Everywhere I’m Not

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: That’s the one song anyone knows by Translator

LINEUP: Steve Barton, Bob Darlington, Larry Dekker, Dave Scheff

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: San Francisco band finds some underground success via MTV with their single, but the album has some minor gems as well.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Translator’s “Everywhere I’m Not”, which includes a reference to Nova Scotia for some reason, was a staple of early MTV, and frankly should have introduced the band to a larger following.

The album is full of songs in the same wheelhouse, with Bob Darlington’s songs adding a little variety and counterpoint to Steve Barton’s. But they almost all have the same jangling guitar, lyrics about love and losing love, and pleading vocals. In effect, they’re all OK but not as good as the single.

Most critics and fans lament that the band never took off commercially, but such is life. This record doesn’t scream ‘classic’, but it’s good to check out if you liked the single.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Someone crossed up, and claimed “Everywhere I’m Not” was a tribute to John Lennon. Actually, “Everywhere”, an album cut, was a tribute to the fallen Beatle.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: There’s a CD with some radio versions of songs.

GRADE: B: If you dug 80’s jangly New Wave, then by all means…
