Hank Williams – 40 Greatest Hits

ARTIST: Hank Williams                220px-40_Greatest_Hits_(Hank_Williams,_Sr._album)

TITLE:  40 Greatest Hits

YEAR RELEASED: Compilation

SINGLES: There’s way too many to list. All of ‘em were A’s and B’s

OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: You know most of these songs, whether you admit it or not.

LINEUP: Hank Williams and the Drifting Cowboys (various musicians)

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: The best compilation of the country music legend. This features authentic non-overdubbed recordings.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: I often say, when asked about country music, is that I like “real” country music, like Merle, Buck and Hank…SENIOR! These 40 songs form the bedrock of country music, and by extension, the bedrock of rock-and-roll and some southern R&B.

As good of a performer as Williams was (his voice and inflection are masterful), the songwriting is what brings it home. He evokes emotions of all kind in his songs, and can say so much with a phrase, combined with the music and the tone, so much so that many songwriters are still trying and failing to emulate him.

Any music fan worth his salt needs this compilation. There are bigger authentic collections out there, but this is a great one.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Avoid overdubbed collections and ‘duets’. Stick to this and the Complete Hank Williams (a 225 track set).

GRADE: A+: Look no further for classic country music.
