Whitesnake – Trouble

ARTIST: Whitesnake                                troubleoriginal

TITLE:  Trouble

SINGLES: Lie Down (A Modern Love Song), The Time Is Right for Love

LINEUP: David Coverdale, Mick Moody, Bernie Marsden, Neil Murray, Jon Lord, David Dowle

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: After an EP, ex-Deep Purple belter David Coverdale unleashes his new band on the masses. The debut is better than you may think.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: Believe it or not, there’s some restraint on this first album by Whitesnake. David Coverdale’s voice is as powerful as it would be, but the songs aren’t epics but rather fairly compact hard rock songs – more guitar based than Deep Purple even with Jon Lord on board.220px-wstroublecd

Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden provide ample support for Coverdale on guitar and backing vocals. In fact, Marsden has a lead vocal on this album. The cover of “Day Tripper” could have been bad, but in reality, it’s not.

I’m not saying it’s the perfect record. The lyrics ain’t great most of the time and the instrumental is superfluous. snakebiteep

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Maybe the reason it sounds so compact and reasonable is that it was recorded and mixed in 10 days.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, the original EP by them called Snakebite, is appended. That hit #61 in the UK charts, and ain’t half bad, either.

GRADE: B:  If you don’t have high expectations for this, you’ll be surprised.
