Yellowman – Young, Gifted & Yellow

ARTIST: Yellowman MI0003529759
TITLE: Young, Gifted & Yellow
YEAR RELEASED: Compilation
CHART ACTION: Probably in Jamaica
SINGLES: All of these were in Jamaica
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Hardcore reggae and dancehall fans know his output.
LINEUP: Yellowman with some help from Fathead
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Eighties reggae dancehall pioneer’s compilation grabs almost all of his relevant cuts and then some.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: A compilation like this is almost too much. Yellowman has released a about 4,289 records in Jamaica (approximately) and he has a lot of classics among them. He’s been well compiled as well, but finding the right compilation that has all of the essentials, especially for novices, is tough.

I chose this one because it contained most of the songs on the other really comprehensive collection, and was only a couple of key songs from the album I had as a college student.

Forty tracks? For the novice it’s too much but the smaller collection does miss some key songs. For the hardcore, you don’t need this. Anyway, I need to pick through this a couple of times to boil it down to the essentials, but anyone with any inkling of liking reggae should check out Yellowman.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: He is an albino, and grew up in an orphanage because he was shunned as a child.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: No – forty tracks is enough!

GRADE: B: That’s for the length and breadth of this – an excess or riches. I will need to pare this down but it will take time. But it is worth investing in Yellowman.
