Young Marble Giants – Colossal Youth

ARTIST: Young Marble Giants 220px-Young_Marble_Giants_-_Colossal_Youth_cover
TITLE: Colossal Youth
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: Hole covered Credit in the Straight World
LINEUP: Philip Moxham, Stuart Moxham, Alison Statton.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Minimalist Welsh band that released just one album and a couple of EPs but were influential beyond their output (and the borders of Wales).

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: There’s not really much to talk about the style of the Young Marble Giants. Phil Moxham plays bass, Stuart plays either keyboard or guitar, Statton sings in an almost dead-pan cool voice, and there’s a drum machine. There’s not a lot of adornment. So you either really like minimalism, or you don’t.

While the songs sounded simple, the songs themselves were a little more complicated than that, covering subjects in an obtuse and mostly tuneful way.

For me, it’s a little off; it’s so simple and the vocals so deadpan you wonder if it’s just a backing track with a guide vocal waiting for a band to record over the top of it. This did influence a whole bunch of artists that had a keyboard, a drum machine, and a dream (and maybe a couple of friends to help too).

NOTES & MINUTIAE: Kurt Cobain claimed they (and the Vaselines) were his favorite band.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: Yes, the latest release has about everything they did – two EPs and other stuff.

GRADE: B: This abject minimalism isn’t quite for me, but I can appreciate what they were accomplishing.
