Zero Boys – Vicious Circle

ARTIST: Zero Boys MI0001874856
TITLE: Vicious Circle
SINGLES: Livin’ in the 80’s
OTHER SONGS YOU MAY KNOW: If you were hangin’ out in the Indy punk scene, as it was, in the early 80’s…yeah this was your soundtrack..
LINEUP: Paul Mahern, Terry “Hollywood” Howe, David “Tufty” Clough, Mark Cutsinger.
WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Hardcore punk, Indiana-style. Wow, this cooks.

SOME WORDS, PHRASES AND CLAUSES ABOUT THIS RECORD: The capital of my home state of Indiana isn’t known for a music scene. Yeah, there were fits and starts of scenes over the years, but nothing really stuck. Some bands made some decent albums but very few snuck outside of the state line.

Here’s one, though, that got some national acclaim on the insular national punk scene in the 80’s. This is a very tight, taut, and classic hardcore punk rock record. It’s all loudfastrules, but the band knows how to play, especially bassist Clough, who drives everything forward. Mahern’s vocals are requisitely snotty (similar to Milo of the Descendants) and drummer Cutsinger keeps up with the pace.

Punk rock fans, grab this if you can. It shows there was more to the early punk scene than the well-documented LA bands, and it’s a great precursor to 90’s bands like Green Day.

NOTES & MINUTIAE: “Livin’ in the 80’s” was actually an early EP which used a different bass player.

IS THERE A DELUXE VERSION: A couple of extra tracks found its way onto the CD version.

GRADE: A-: Like a lot of loudfastrules, this wears you out after a while. Man, this cooks with gas, though.
